Former Ghanaian Striker Junior Agogo Dies in London After Long Health Challenge

Agogo sealed his place within the hearts of Ghana fans together with his performances at the 2008 Africa Cup of nations where he scored 3 goals together with a late winner against Nigeria in capital of Ghana, Accra.

Former striker of the Black Stars of Ghana, Junior Agogo is dead. Junior Agogo was reported to have died at the early hours of yesterday at the age of 40. as reported by GhanaWeb, the former Zamalek FC striker passed on at a hospital in England after a protracted battle with stroke.

The African country football player was initially hospitalized in 2015 after suffering a serious stroke which debilitated him. In April 2019, the striker disclosed that he might no longer write with his hand, a condition that appears to be going worse despite being treated

Agogo who featured for Ghana at the 2008 Africa Cup of nations made a total of 27 appearances for his country and scored 12 goals. The 40-year-old also played for the likes of Nottingham Forest, Zamalek, Sheffield Wednesday, Queens Park Ranger and Chicago fire among other clubs.

Laryea Kingston, the former Hearts midfielder has this to say;

“I think that was the goal that sealed his popularity in Ghana,”

“During the tournament, we could feel his influence in the team grow and his popularity goes up but that goal sealed everything.

Regardless of playing alongside game makers like Michael Essien and Asamoah Gyan, Agogo was the team’s star man.

“A lot of fans didn’t know but those of us in the team knew he was going to be good for us,” Kingston states further.

“He spent a lot of time in the gym and his strength reflected in the way he played. He simply wanted to score goals and make a mark for the team and I am glad he did.

“He had a word for everyone, enjoyed a good dance, could tease a lot and take it too. This has really hit a lot of us.”

Nottingham Forest FC were among those who paid tributes to the Ghanaian player.
